Coal India is the largest coal producing company in the world. Based in Kolkata, the company is a state-controlled mining company in India that operates 471 mines in 21 coal fields across eight states. The company runs its operations through eight Indian subsidiaries and a newly formed subsidiary in Africa. In fiscal 2011, Coal India produced 431 million tons of coal, more than 80% of India's total coal production, and fueled more than 70% of India's power generation.
