Individual investors (retail and HNI) hold Rs 12.90 lakh crore worth assets in mutual funds, shows the latest data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India, or, AMFI data as on March 2020.
Retail assets stood at Rs 4.22 lakh crore while high net worth individuals, or HNIs, held Rs 7.74 lakh crore. The definition of HNI was changed by the regulator from those investing Rs 5 lakh and above per application to Rs 2 lakh and above per application.
Corporates held the highest amount of share at Rs 9.87 lakh crore.
Ticket size
Retail investors’ average account size is Rs 60,701. Institutional investors had the highest ticket size at Rs 7.9 crore per account.
Mix of assets
Equity schemes account for 39.7% of the industry assets in March 2020, down from 42.5% in March 2019. Equity schemes derive 87% of their assets from individual investors.
Debt-oriented account for 31.7% of industry assets in March 2020, up from 29.1% in March 2019. Institutional investors dominate liquid and money market schemes (84%), debt schemes (56%) and ETFs, FOFs (92%).
Geographic spread
Around 16% of the industry’s assets came from B30 locations in March 2020. Assets from B30 locations decreased from Rs 4.47 lakh crore in February 2020 to Rs 3.85 lakh crore in March 2020, a decrease of 14%.
B30 locations tend towards equity assets. Around 62% of the assets from B30 locations are in equity schemes in March 2020. For T30 locations, equity schemes accounted for 36% of assets in March 2020.
Around 60% of the assets of individual investors are from T30 cities, brought by distributors.
Direct assets
A large proportion of direct investments were in non-equity oriented schemes where institutional investors dominate.
About 14% of the retail investors chose to invest directly, while 22% of HNI assets were invested directly. (Direct plans can be bought from AMC portals, Mutual Fund Utility platform and Registered Investment Advisers)
