Investors today face an overwhelming universe of actively managed equity funds, making it increasingly difficult to separate sustainable, long-term strategies from short-term winners. Morningstar Manager Research's Best of Breed-India report aims to simplify this decision-making process. Leveraging our rigorous, forward-looking qualitative research framework, the report highlights a select group of best-in-class Indian equity strategies-our highest-conviction picks-that we believe are structurally well positioned to deliver superior long-term outcomes. Rather than focusing only on past returns, the report emphasizes key factors such as strong investment leadership, disciplined processes, and sustainable competitive advantages.
Built on the Morningstar Medalist Rating Framework
The foundation of the Best of Breed selection is the Morningstar Medalist Rating, Morningstar's forward-looking assessment of a strategy's ability to outperform its benchmark, net of fees, over a full market cycle. This rating aims to highlight strategies most likely to deliver long-term value. Morningstar assigns ratings at the vehicle level so that fee differences across share classes are properly captured, reflecting the significant role costs play in long-term investor outcomes.
The Medalist Rating is built on three core pillars - People, Process, and Parent.
- The People Pillar evaluates the experience, skill, structure, and stability of the investment team.
- The Process Pillar assesses the strength, clarity, repeatability, and discipline of the investment approach, including portfolio construction and risk management.
- The Parent Pillar examines the asset manager's stewardship culture, governance standards, talent management, and alignment with investor interests.
These pillars collectively provide a comprehensive view of a strategy's ability to deliver sustained performance across market cycles. Each pillar is rated on a five-point scale, ranging from Low to High. For actively managed funds, the People and Process Pillars each contribute 45% to the overall assessment, while the Parent Pillar accounts for 10%.
The final rating is expressed on a five-tier scale: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Neutral, and Negative. Gold, Silver, and Bronze are awarded only to strategies expected to deliver positive net alpha over the long term. Gold represents Morningstar's highest-conviction ideas, Silver denotes strong prospects with slightly lower relative standing, and Bronze reflects strategies expected to add value with moderate conviction. Neutral strategies are not expected to materially outperform, while Negative strategies face structural challenges that may hinder results.
