Morningstar India website offers a host of tools on its website for investors and advisers to find information about funds, Unit Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPs) and stocks.

In this post, we will explore Stock Search tool which can be accessed under the Tools > Portfolio > Stock Search.

This tool can be useful for those who are investing in direct equities as well as mutual funds to understand which mutual funds are already holding the stocks that they intend to buy or already hold.

By hitting the go button, you will get a list of funds that own Reliance Industries Ltd.

This feature provides information as follows:

  • Number of shares: The total number of RIL stocks held by the fund
  • Market value: Fund’s assets under management
  • Stock Market Value: Market value of the stock in the fund’s portfolio
  • Weighting: Weight of the stock in the portfolio
  • Number of holdings: Number of stocks held by the fund
  • Top 10 equity holding %: Percentage of assets held by the fund in the top ten stocks

RIL is held by 362 schemes. These funds collectively own 27.12 crore shares of RIL as on June 30, 2021.

You can sort the above filters in highest to lowest order and vice versa.  In the above example, SBI Nifty 50 ETF holds the highest number (4.82 crore shares) of RIL shares, as on June 2021. The lowest number of stocks (427) in RIL is held by IDFC Sensex ETF. The number of stocks held by a fund will also be a function of the AUM in case of ETF/index funds. SBI ETF Nifty 50 AUM as on June 2021 is Rs 99,965 crore. Thus, it would naturally hold more stocks of the underlying index. RIL has the highest weightage of 10.01% in Nifty 50 Index as on June 2021.

Let’s look at another example of a stock Dodla Dairy which was listed on exchanges on June 28, 2021. A total of 14 schemes hold 57.49 lakh shares of this company. SBI Small Cap Fund owns the highest number of shares (30.06 lakh) of Dodla Dairy, followed by SBI Magnum Midcap Fund (8.11 lakh) and DSP Small Cap Fund (6.07 lakh) as on June 2021.

Good feature, not many website have this feature. Suggestion - it would be nice to know if a particular stock is part of an index or not. Something similar instead of fund it is index.
